EAN barcode

EAN and UPC are essentially indistinguishable, except that EAN has 13 digits and UPC has only 12 digits. The extra one is part of the national code, indicating the registered area of the barcode. The national code does not indicate where the product was produced. UPC and EAN are interchangeable. Simply add a zero to the first digit of the UPC encoding to convert it to EAN, which is quite simple.
